The World Through Rose-Tinted Glasses

15 years and over 1000 productions across every sector of the industry

One of the first things people notice about me is my rose-tinted glasses. Albeit stylish, they treat my deutan color blindness. During my college years, the film industry was in the early stages of digital cinema — directors of photography (DoPs) had very limited control over color. Color blindness wasn't a significant issue — you choose your lenses, a film stock, and lights.  In many ways colorblindness was an advantage because I can better visualize contrast.

However, within a few years, the industry landscape changed dramatically. LED and fluorescent lights, which don’t render color accurately, became mainstream. PCs became powerful enough to manipulate color, video supplanted celluloid, and cinematographers were expected to color match film. Suddenly, my color blindness felt like a severe handicap.

To avoid the challenges of color work, I transitioned away from being a DoP to a full-time camera operator. I embraced the athletic aspects of camera operation, which over time helped me manage another disability: a lumbar break. To help better refine my understanding of the politics and business of these industries — I also started producing content.

In 2018, I decided to try a pair of Enchroma glasses. To my delight, they enabled me to pursue cinematography once more. A colorblind cinematographer with a spinal injury—just saying that makes me smile as I reflect on the obstacles I've overcome and the goals I aspire to achieve.

I cannot overstate the importance and healing power of art and the humanities. They drive me—the need to strive for perfection through creation, knowing it can never truly be achieved. In the pursuit of perfection, we perfect ourselves.
